Built By Women

Submissions are open through October 15, 2019 for Built by Women Los Angeles 2020. Submit HERE

Starting with the landmark exhibition in 2014, Built by Women has offered the opportunity to demonstrate the breadth of achievement in the building industry by women at the highest levels. The purpose of this competition is to recognize the significant but often overlooked work of women architects, landscape architects, urban designers, engineers, contractors, and developers in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The initiative is modeled on similar successful programs in New York City and Washington D.C. In 2018, 15,000 copies of the Built by Women Manhattan Map were distributed for free to A‘18 attendees.

A map, exhibitions, programming, and tours will be organized to feature the selected projects. This independent effort will enhance the architectural programming around the AIA National Conference in Los Angeles, May 14–16, 2020, and extend through the summer with an exhibition at the Architecture + Design Museum opening on May 14.

Built by Women celebrates women’s contributions to the built environment. In addition to recognizing and supporting the diverse women working in these professions, Built by Women provides strong role models and mentors for both current professionals and students.

Women are underrepresented in the building professions: architecture (15–18%), engineering (4.5–13.7%), and construction (2.6%). Built by Women’s goal is to change this. Increasing the number of women in science, technology, engineering, architecture and mathematics is critical to our country’s ability to compete globally.

Teams that reflect diverse skills, backgrounds, and gender identities achieve greater innovation, leading to increased economic growth.

How Does Built by Women Work?

  1. A community gathers and submits its best women-built sites
  2. We gather an expert jury that selects the winners
  3. A major exhibition is held in the competition site for winners, participants and the community
