Beverly Willis, FAIA
Beverly Willis, FAIA, is an artist, architect, author and philanthropist. After 50 years of practice, she founded the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation in 2002. She served as President of the California Council of American Institute of Architects. Beverly was a founding trustee of the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., a position she still holds.
Julia Murphy, AIA, LEED AP
Julia Murphy is an Associate Director at Skidmore Owings and Merrill LLP managing several multiple large-scale commercial and mixed-use projects including Manhattan West and Citigroup Corporate Headquarters and a residential tower for Avalon Bay Communities. Julia is the leader of SOM’s New York Practice Group and the chairperson of the SOM Women’s Initiative, a group devoted to the professional development of women within the firm. Julia is an active member of WX, New York Women Executives in Real Estate and is the President Elect of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation. Julia is a third generation architect and a graduate of Colgate University and the University of Pennsylvania where she received her Master of Architecture degree in 2003. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Julia lives in Brooklyn, NY with her daughter and husband.
Patricia Harris, JD, LEED, AP
Patti is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of LicenseSure LLC. Patti spent 13 years as the Managing Partner of a New York City-based construction law firm; in addition to overseeing the business operations of the firm, she advised clients on office and business management issues. Patti is very active in design industry organizations and quite attuned to business issues and challenges faced by design professionals. She serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Global Design Alliance and the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation. She is a member of the Construction Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
LicenseSure is Patti’s third start-up business. Through her other businesses, Patti has provided consulting services in the areas of business start-ups, operations, management and strategic planning. She started her career as a corporate attorney with the New York City law firms of Giancarlo & Gleiberman and Richards & O’Neil. She received her B.A. from Pomona College and her J.D. and M.B.A. with distinction from New York University. Patti is a LEED Accredited Professional.
Suzanne Pennasilico, SPHR
As Chief Human Resources Officer of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) Suzanne brings more than 25 years of experience in the delivery of integrated Human Resources solutions for a diverse group of multi-national employees. Prior to SOM, Suzanne was employed by Barneys New York; her last position was Director of Human Resources and Labor Relations. She began her career in the telecommunications industry in Organization Development and Training and held several HR Generalist positions in the retail and fashion industry.
Joan Blumenfeld, FAIA, IIDA, LEED ID+C
Joan Blumenfeld is a principal and the Interior Design Director at Perkins+Will. Her work has won awards from the AIA, the Society of American Architects, Contract Magazine, Interior Design Magazine, the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), and IFMA, and has been published in many magazines and industry journals. She is a board member for the New York City Building Congress Foundation and a member of the Executive Committee of the Harvard GSD Alumni Council.
Richard T. Anderson
Richard T. Anderson is President of RTA Advisory Services LLC, a private firm specializing in government relations and strategic industry planning. He is President Emeritus of the New York Building Congress. For more than twenty years, Mr. Anderson ushered in a period of unprecedented influence and growth for the Building Congress, a public policy organization in its 95th year of promoting the design, construction and real estate community. In his role as an expert in government policy and construction, Mr. Anderson’s views and assistance on a range of issues are sought by private firms, public officials, agency leaders, the news media, good government groups and other organizations inside and outside of the building community.
Lance Jay Brown, FAIA, DPACSA
Lance Jay Brown is the principal of Lance Jay Brown Architecture + Urban Design in New York City, Fellow of the Institute for Urban Design, ACSA Distinguished Professor at the Spitzer School of Architecture, CCNY, and 2014 President of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter. He is the Founding Co-Chair, Design for Risk and Reconstruction Committee; a Founding Board Member, Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization; Inaugural Chancellor, ACSA College of Distinguished Professors; and AIA/ACSA 2007 Topaz Medallion Laureate. He has served as director of the School of Architecture at CCNY, director of the City College Architectural Center, and assistant director for programs at the National Endowment for the Arts.
Melissa Burton, Ph.D
Melissa Burton works as an Associate Principal in the Advanced Technology & Research team in Arup’s New York office. She has over 15 years’ experience in consultancy across a range of roles including business strategy development and implementation, project management, communication and assessment of design risk, and technical leadership. Melissa is an active member of the engineering community and has a leading role in setting standards for applying beyond code approaches; specifically related to the wind design of complex structures. She is the equality, diversity and inclusion representative for the Arup New York office and speaks publicly about the importance of diversity in the architecture, engineering and construction community.
Peter DiMaggio, PE SECB
Peter DiMaggio is Co-CEO of Thornton Tomasetti and is responsible for defining, articulating and driving the firm’s strategic vision. In addition to participating in the development and execution of the overall business plan, he is involved in strategic initiatives from identifying new markets and merger and acquisition opportunities to instituting mentorship and professional development programs. Pete is a recognized expert in special structures and protective design and security. He has been involved in the design and structural hardening of numerous government buildings, including more than 40 U.S. embassies, federal facilities and courthouses. His diverse portfolio also includes office buildings, educational facilities, hotels, stadiums, laboratories, residential towers and unique structures around the world.
Erleen Hatfield, PE, AIA
Erleen Hatfield, PE, AIA, is the Managing Partner of the Hatfield Group, a multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm based in New York. She has over 25 years of experience in the design of complex structures worldwide. She frequently writes and presents on topics related to innovation and technology in engineering and architecture. Her firm, Hatfield Group focuses on synthesis of engineering and architecture, putting client value first. Hatfield Group uses bespoke engineering design, technology, and innovation to achieve their clients’ goals. With a keen appreciation for design she has worked on iconic buildings around the world. She sits on numerous national industry boards and teaches at the Yale University School of Architecture.
Her experience includes the new $1.5B home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, the Mercedes Benz Stadium, with a never been done before aperture style retractable roof. Other projects include the new headquarters for PNC Bank in Pittsburgh and the 9/11 Pavilion at the World Trade Center site in New York City. She was featured on the television programs on the Science Channel “World’s Greatest Stadium” and on the History Channel’s “Building Giants”. She was named a “Power Player” and “Game Changer” by Sports Business Journal magazine. She is both a licensed engineer and architect, plus a LEED BD+C certified professional.
With Brookfield Properties and its predecessor, Olympia & York, since 1982, Ms. Kanner oversees design and construction in the U.S. Graduated Union College in 1980, she joined the construction division of Olympia & York in 1982 and was appointed to run Olympia and York’s construction company in 1986. She became Vice President, Design and Construction in 1994, Senior Vice President, Design and Construction in 2006 and Executive Vice President, Design and Construction in 2015. In her 34 year tenure with the company, Ms. Kanner has played a key role in the construction, design and development or redevelopment of over 40 million square feet of signature Brookfield projects such as World Financial Center/ Brookfield Place, 300 Madison Avenue, Bay Adelaide Centre, the restoration/renovation of the Winter Garden at World Financial Center after 9/11, and currently Manhattan West. She is a member of WX and sits on the Boards of Directors of New York Building Congress (Vice Chairman), The Salvadori Center, The Opus Group, and The Regional Plan Association and sits on the Board of Trustees of The National Building Museum.
Jill Lerner, FAIA
With over 35 years of design and management experience, Jill Lerner has led the design of numerous award-winning academic and institutional research facilities projects for public and private clients throughout the United States. As a Principal at KPF, she is responsible for all aspects of project management and design, and is the primary client contact during all phases—from initial programming and conceptual design through construction and project close-out. Jill has also led master planning efforts for several academic and research facilities, including the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business, the Walter B. Ford College for Creative Studies, and the Semel Institute and Center for Health Sciences at the University of California-Los Angeles. An active member of the architectural community, Jill was President of the AIA NY Chapter in 2013, and is currently a Board Member of the Urban Green, the New York City arm of the USGBC and is on the External Advisory Board of the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future. An active member of her alma mater, Cornell University, Jill was the only architect on the Cornell University Board of Trustees (2004-2009), is past Chair of the University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning Alumni Advisory Council and is an active member of the President’s Council of Cornell Women. She has also taught Professional Practice to architecture students in Cornell’s New York City program.
Kenneth Levien, FAIA
Ken is an industry leader in the field of real estate project management and owner’s representation, and the founder of Levien & Co. He provides real estate advisory and executive management oversight on many of the firm’s complex projects. With nearly four decades in project management, construction monitoring, property assessment, architecture and business management, Ken provides invaluable experience and guidance to the firm’s clients, projects and employees. Ken currently serves on the Washington University in St. Louis’ School of Architecture’s National Advisory Council. He served a three-year term as Treasurer of the New York City chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), is a Trustee of the New York Building Congress (NYBC) Foundation, and currently serves as Co-Chair of the NYBC Planning, Growth & Sustainability Committee as well as the Treasurer of the New York Building Congress Foundation.
Carol Loewenson, FAIA, LEED AP
Carol Loewenson’s expertise ranges from highly technical buildings, renovations and façade replacements to work involving both the private and public sector. Her approach to architecture is deeply rooted in a commitment to public spaces and an acknowledgment of how the shape of a building, city, or institution impacts people’s lives. She brings a careful consideration of context to her work, balancing preservation and modernization to generate sustainable transformations that capture the complexity of a space’s past history and future goals.
Carol Loewenson joined Mitchell Giurgola in 1982 and became a partner in 1996. Her work at the firm includes projects for the New York Public Library, Rockefeller University, New York University, Cornell University, LaGuardia Community College, and the New York State Unified Court System. She serves as a Board member of the AIA Center for Architecture, the IDC Foundation, and New Yorkers for Parks. She was as elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2013 and elected President of AIA New York in 2016.
Rich McFadden, PE LEED AP
Rich McFadden joined JB&B in 2003, and has acted as Project Manager and Partner-in-Charge in the Electrical Department on a wide variety of projects and building types. With a strong background in facilities operations, Rich has lent his expertise to the live upgrade of large mission-critical systems supporting projects such as Citigroup’s New York headquarters at 388-390 Greenwich Street. He has also played an instrumental role in the development of Brookfield’s multi-building complex at Manhattan West for which he serves as the Partner-in-Charge. Rich currently serves as National Director on the ACEC New York Executive Committee. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Bucknell University, and is a licensed Professional Engineer and LEED Accredited Professional.
Mary McLeod, Ph.D
Mary McLeod is a professor of architecture at Columbia University, where she teaches architecture history and theory. Her research and publications have focused on the history of the modern movement and on contemporary architecture theory, examining issues concerning the connections between architecture and politics. She has written extensively on Le Corbusier’s architecture and urban planning, and is the editor of and contributor to the book Charlotte Perriand: An Art of Living. She is also the co-editor of Architecture, Criticism, Ideology and Architecture Reproduction, and is currently co-editing a website on pioneering American women architects for Beverly Willis Architectural Foundation.
Michele O’Connor, PE LEED AP
Michele O’Connor is a Principal at Langan and a director of the firm’s civil engineering practice in New York City. Langan is an integrated planning, site engineering, and environmental consulting service firm for private developers, property owners, and public sector clients. Michele’s practice includes site engineering design and planning for a wide variety of commercial, institutional, recreation, retail, and residential development projects. Notable projects include Hudson Park and Boulevard in Manhattan, Gateway Center at Bronx Terminal Market in the Bronx, TWA Flight Center Hotel at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island and Dock 72 at Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn.
Besides her passion for civil engineering, Michele is also extremely passionate about supporting, mentoring, and empowering women in STEM and the engineering community. This dedication inspired her to co-found Women@Langan in September 2015. The program’s mission is to foster an atmosphere of mentorship and support to empower the firm’s women to achieve career and personal success. Since its launch, Women@Langan has provided a forum for women to develop a community, share experiences, and form lasting relationships. Michele’s leadership abilities are also visible throughout the industry. She is the Vice Chair of the Rutgers University School of Engineering Industry Advisory Board, an Executive Board Member of Women Builders Council, Past Chair of the ASCE Met Section Diversity & Inclusion Committee and past board member of CREW New York.
Ann (Annie) Rolland, FAIA, LEED AP
18As a Principal at FXCollaborative and Founding Director of the firm’s Cultural/Educational Studio, Annie is instrumental in the overall conceptual and technical integrity of the studio’s award-winning work. Her strength is her ability to blend astute analytical and organizational skills with creativity and spirit. Inquisitive and optimistic by nature, Ann questions the status quo, and tests alternative strategies. She has extensive experience in the renovation and expansion of educational environments; creating spaces that reflect the unique personality of each institution. She is a recognized industry leader and active member in several academic institutions and social organizations, such as the Nontraditional Employment for Women’s (NEW) Ambassador Council (co-chair, 2014-2018); the Washing University Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts National Council; and AIA New York’s Architecture for Education Committee (co-chair, 2016-2017). Annie has been a guest juror and an Adjunct Professor at New York University’s Department of Urban Design & Architecture Studies (2013-2018); and served on the New York College of Technology Architectural Advisory Board (2014-2017). She earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Architecture from the University of Washington in St. Louis where she received the Washington University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012. Annie is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
Victoria Rosner, Ph.D
Victoria Rosner is currently Senior Associate Dean of the School of General Studies at Columbia University, where she also teaches classes in the Department of English. She is also the author of Modernism and the Architecture of Private Life as well as co-editor of Design and Feminism: Re-visioning Spaces, Places and Everyday Things. Victoria also writes about literature and popular culture for The Huffington Post. Kirsten Sibilia, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP
A vocal advocate for the value of design and the importance of creating resilient and sustainable urban density, Kirsten Sibilia is a Principal at Dattner Architects. In her work as the one non-architect partner out of eight partners, Kirsten manages the firm’s requirements in marketing (communications, branding and sales), human resources (staffing, professional development and transition planning), and management of the firm’s gallery. She is also on the board of Creative Migration, a nonprofit that uses art and film to advocate for social and environment justice. She serves her local community as an appointed member of the Architectural Review Board in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. She has been recognized as an SMPS NY Principal of the Year (2015), AIA NY Special Citation (2011), SMPS NY Marketing Mentor Award Recipient (2008), and SMPS NY Marketing Achievement Award Recipient (2001). In the past, Kirsten served on the board of the AIA NY as Director of Publications and Chair of the Oculus Committee.
Suman Sorg, FAIA
Barbara Wilks, FAIA, FASLA
Barbara Wilks, principal and founder of W Architecture and Landscape Architecture, is a leader in the field of design. Beginning her career as an architect and obtaining prominence for her design skills, she soon realized that her interests in public space linked with the profession of landscape architecture. Now as an architect and landscape architect, Barbara uses her leadership skills to realign nature and communities.
Barbara has won many awards for her work and was elected to both the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Landscape Architecture for her design accomplishments. Her projects range in scale from urban plans, to public spaces, to infrastructure, to architecture. In addition to opening her projects for participation, during the design process Barbara continues the spirit of inclusion to the surrounding communities and government agencies. The work reflects her leadership skills in the resulting synthesis of these multiple inputs to create a comprehensive connection between the fundamental ecology of the site, its historical and cultural legacy, and its current iteration.
Wilks serves on the Design Trust for Public Space, the Van Alen Climate Council, the McHarg Center at the University of Pennsylvania, the Planning Committee of the Municipal Art Society, NYC, and the Board of Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.
Cynthia Phifer Kracauer, AIA
Cynthia is an architect and currently serves as the Executive Director for the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation (BWAF). She joins the foundation following ten years as the Managing Director of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter, Center for Architecture. Both an architect and a creative institutional administrator, Cynthia was responsible for the creation of Archtober, the New York City month-long festival of architecture and design.
As one of the early pioneers of co-education in the 1970’s, Cynthia graduated from Princeton University receiving both a BA magna cum laude, and Master’s of Architecture. She worked for Phillip Johnson in the 80’s and taught at the University of Virginia, New Jersey Institute of Technology and her alma mater.
Aislinn joins BWAF from Los Angeles where she produced sculpture, worked in arts administration and provided freelance art services to contemporary art galleries and studio assistance to artists. Aislinn completed her graduate studies in Fine Art at Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 2016, and received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, UK, in 2012. Prior to her undergraduate studies, Aislinn completed a foundation degree in Art and Design at Chelsea College of Art, London, UK.
Aislinn has worked on a number of international publishing and art projects, including leading research on and providing editorial assistance with ‘The One and The Many’, a public sculpture by artist Peter Randall-Page located in Fitzroy Place, London, UK.
Aislinn has received grants from the Danish Literature Exchange Fund and the Arts Council UK in support of her literary and artistic development and work.
